We're looking for new Admins!

Our servers are up and finalized, and we are now to the point of looking for some new admins. If you would like to help seed our servers and bring them back to life you need to simply play in them a few times a week. One PUGG member idling on the server will fill up the server in minutes during high traffic time. If you are interested in being an admin please help seed the servers and drop an email to Dan Kaczmark or me (dmkaz or fatsteveirwin) @pugg.net. We will check the server logs to see who's seeding and appoint admins who help seed PUGG. Happy Fraggin' Chris Rotach

LAN XXXVII Review

Attendance: Prolly around 50 at peak Games DotA RA3 COD4 TF2 misc Tournaments as of 1am TF2 DotA As compared to the 1st LAN this Lan was faaaarrr better. I think the overall setup of the lobby was much preferable to Wiley or any other old dining court. The gaming was very solid from 2ish until about 6 when the power crashed out which was epic fail. Once the TF2 tournament "started" at 8pm things started to get a bit boring. The TF2 tourney took like 1hr to get setup was a big negative to the participants. Seems like nobody really thought about it either before the LAN cuz it was 4v4, on Granary and Steel LOL. The CAL mod was nice but again, it took forever to get going. Personally too, I thought the tattoo contest for a 60 dollar mouse was pretty silly. I'm glad Rob got it, but imo it should've gone to someone who actually won a game of something. The sponsorship was really nice was awesome and all the stuff Razer sent was cool. If we could get like 4 more sponsors people would be flocking to the LANs like crazy I'm sure. all in all, more tournament planning pre-lan and also fun OMG OMG OMG OMG NEVER EDIT MY POSTS RAWR!!!!!!!

LEFT 4 DEAD Release Party

Right now I am planning on hosting a small Release Party for the release of L4D. This will be the weekend following the game's Tuedsay (Nov. 18 ) release. I was thinking Saturday night , the 22nd. It would likely be held in Hillenbrand, AFTER the Old Oaken Bucket Game, starting somewhere between 6 and 8 and going until 2, maybe later. There is a room in Hillenbrand that would be GREAT for this. It's in the basement, there's a projector, no windows, tile floors.. very good atmosphere for a zombie thriller. At this point, food will probably be your responsibility, but there won't be an additional cost to members. Please post your interest or suggestions for something like this in this thread. Thanks!

Site Outages

"Yesterday, Purdue utility workers were messing around with the circuit breaker and turned off our circuit. I talked to a worker here and he turned the circuit back on. It appears they killed all the circuits in the entire office area since none were labeled. Our circuit is now labeled to be never shut off and this shouldn't happen again. All the servers and equipment are back up and running and should be functioning normally." -Jason Go figure, another outage that was out of our control! Everything should be back to normal as Jason said.

IUCGC Events

Here is some information on upcoming IUCGC events that I was asked to pass along:

IUCGC is bringing you another round of the action with LAN War XIV this April 5-6! Keeping with tradition, this 24+ hour event will be stocked heavily with swag; we already have big commitments from many sources, including at LEAST one 8800! Our 5 tournaments will be determined by your votes when you register for the event, which can be paid for through our web service for $15. As per the other LAN Wars, XIV is to be held in Briscoe Quad's student activity room. OH, and BIG news! We will be featuring access to IU's lightning fast broadband for each of our attendees! No more fussing about versions of Steam or patches, all thanks to the magic of INTERNET! For more information, please visit www.iugaming.com!

Also, our first annual Console Chaos (the console-based, sister event to the LAN War) will be the previous weekend on March 29-30. Competition will be fierce in Smash Bros. Brawl, Halo 3, Guitar Hero 3, and more! Hosted in the exact same room as the LAN War, the Briscoe SAR, Console Chaos will charge no entry fee for observers, but competitors and eaters-of-food will be charged a small fee.

From Purdue's Operations and Maint. Dept: "The electrical service a large section of STEW will be shutdown on Saturday, February 2, 2008, from 4:30am until 5:30am. This is required to balance some of the load on the temporary generators at STEW. This should not affect all of STEW, but it would be advantageous for the building occupants to plan for a total outage. It will not affect HIKS at this time." While our equipment isn't kept in STEW, STEW is our network next-hop... so this bulletin is thus pertinent. Our equipment should only be out for an hour or so during the very early hours of the morning.

PUGG Callout

We will be having our spring semester callout this thursday from 8-9pm in BRNG 1222. Come on out if you're interested and bring your friends!
Posted by stretch / Comment (10)

Site Outages

Long story short, the electrical service to STEW, WTHR, and HIKS was shutdown on Dec. 27th at 6:00pm EDT. It was out for probably 3-6 hours in total for some work on the High Voltage project. While our equipment never powered off, there was no network access from PMU to other parts of campus because STEW is its next-hop. Everything at this point should be back to normal.

PUGG Lan XXXII

We will be having our third LAN party for the year on Saturday, Dec. 1st from noon to 2am at Hillenbrand Hall. Bring your computer or console for some great gaming! If you have not paid dues for membership, cash, check and PayPal can be taken upon arrival - dues are $15 and need to be paid before you can start gaming! What: PUGG LAN XXXII When: Saturday, Dec. 1st from noon to 2am Where: Hillenbrand Hall (for real this time!) Tournaments: We're doing tournaments a little different this time. Because of low interest in tournament play at the last LAN, we will be deciding/voting on tournaments at the LAN. We felt like many of the people that voted for the tournaments weren't present, leaving those that did show up with their choices. We'll try this method out at this LAN and depending on how it fares, decide how to proceed for Spring 2008 LANs.

Iucgc Lan War

Email from the IU Computer Gaming Club, in case anyone is interested!

-----------------------------------------
Greetings, gamers!

IUCGC is back for yet another installment of the LAN War! This is our 13th such event, and we're really excited to be putting it on for some more fragging/pawning/fixing broken wagon wheels.

INFO:
Date: Oct. 27th-28th, 12pm-3pm (27 hrs)
Location: Briscoe Quad Student Activity Room (same as last time)
Fee: $15, which covers food, drinks, swag, and future events!

What to bring:
Computer
Peripherals, such as mouse/keyboard/headset (NO SPEAKERS)
Snax
Your "A" Game.
Oh, and games. We do not provide copies of games.

What to expect: Tons of fun; 5 tournaments, voted on by YOU guys! A Twinkie-eating contest, a possible dance-off, a mysterious prank war, two 42" Plasmas with the latest and greatest in console gaming, at least seconds, probably thirds on dinner/drinks, lots of great swag!

Something to note: We need some help! Our officer pool dwindles every year due to the fact that they, y'know, graduate. We would ideally like this club to be completely student-run, so if you would like to offer us help, contact me, Hamstar, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or just PM me on the forums.

Something else to note: In order to get better swag, we need higher attendance, and in order to get higher attendance, we need better swag, so invite your friends!! Spread the word!

Anyway, enough rambling. Thanks for being a part of the club, and I hope to see you there! Registration opens VERY SOON, so keep an eye out!!

Halo 3 Tournament

We will be hosting a Halo 3 tournament with Microsoft on Sunday, September 30th at 12PM. It will be located in the Wiley East Activities Room (same room as the LAN). It will probably be a random 4-man team tournament. You must sign up ahead of time at http://www.pugg.net/halo3.php to participate as this is open to all Purdue students and not just PUGG members. Prizes will include various Microsoft games (including Halo 3) as well as some Microsoft hardware.

Hope to see you there!

LAN Aftermath

Thanks for coming to the LAN! We had close to 80 people at the event altogether. There was lots of TF2, CS:S, and Smash Brothers with some other games mixed in. Tournaments were held for Gun Game and CS:S (Supreme Commander was canceled due to lack of interest (where the hell were all the people who voted for it?)).

Congratulations to Forsaken for winning the Gun Game tournament, and to team Hyped for winning the CS:S tournament. They are Forsaken, Yoda, Nascarnick88, Gwai Lo, and Ettiave.

And of course, the path of destruction left on Resnet.

New Forums Up

The migration to vBulletin is complete. We imported user data and posts from the old phpbb forums, so you don't need to re-register. Just log in as normal. I would recommend you visit the User CP and set up a few things as noted below. - Timezone was set to GMT for all users when imported, set this to your timezone. - The default view is to only show threads with posts in the last 30 days, I personally set this to show all posts, it's up to you. If you are only seeing a small number of threads check this. - Make sure all other data is correct as there could be errors in the import. - I would also recommend you change your default post editor to the standard instead of basic, since the basic one sucks. Another thing to note, in phpbb post count doesn't go down when posts are removed, however it does in vBulletin. Post count was recalculated after the import so pretty much everyone's post count went down. The theme for vBulletin was designed by yours truly, and I think I worked all the kinks out, but if you see something wacky like yellow text on a yellow background in some obscure place, let me know immediately so I can fix it. Also, in order to not piss someone off, the images for the buttons came from the Black and Gold Theme by Andrew ( http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=124439&highlight=black+gold ). We tried to configure everything correctly, but vBulletin has a massive number of configuration options (like 20x that of phpbb), so we likely missed something. Please contact us if you find something you think needs changed or fixed. We hope you enjoy the new forums. vBulletin is much more powerful and robust than phpbb, and it will help us maintain a better system not only for the forums, but for our user database for LAN's and such. Have fun!
Posted by Ettiave / Comment (17)

Migration to vBulletin

Sometime in the next week or so, we'll be migrating the PUGG forums from phpBB to vBulletin. We feel that it'll enhance the overall forums experience.

Additionally, it should allow us to facilitate member dues/payments within the forums rather than using a pseudo-separate system as we do now. In turn, it should also allow us to take member dues/payments via PayPal, in addition to plain old cash money and check.

The system allows for a lot more detail/granularity as far as options and configuration goes, which gives us greater control over how posting works, forum management, and most importantly, spammer control/CAPTCHA.

We'll let you know when we have a more precise timetable of when the forums will be down and when we except to have everything migrated over.

But a question for everyone... should we migrate over all the posts or leave them behind? If we left them behind, the forums would basically be empty. All user accounts and forums will be moved regardless, but the officers would like to know what the community thinks about the posts contained within these forums.

EDIT: vBulletin upgrade will happen June 1, at about 6pm EST

PUGG LAN XXIX Breakdown

Thanks for coming all! The room at Hillenbrand ended up working pretty well, and we had no network or power issues to speak of, which is I believe is a first for this year. We had about 35 people at our peak, a slightly below normal number, but considering the rain/snow and other events going on, it was an excellent turnout.

Look for us this fall as we kick off the semester right with some more LAN action.

If you are at all interested in running for a position in the leadership of PUGG, I encourage you to come and put your name on the ballot. Voting will take place at the elections, so if you want a say in who is leading the club next year, please come and vote. I expect the elections to take less than 30 minutes, so if you are pressed for time you should be out of there pretty fast. Typically we have very few people show up, and I'd like to see that change this year.

If you cannot make the elections and still want to run for a position for next year, please email or PM me your name and what position you are running for, and if you want a brief statement about why you are running, etc.

Here are the officer positions we will be having this fall and a brief description of each for those interested in running. Along with these, I am also interested in getting a dedicated game server admin who will maintain the dedicated servers we have set up. He would be in charge of finding other admins for the servers, and handling all general server related things. If you have experience in this area and might be interested please let me know and come to the elections if you are able.

President:
The President has the final say on all matters of the club. They are primarily in charge in the planning of PUGG events and all things administrative. The President may assist or take charge of any other area of PUGG if he/she so chooses.

Vice President:
The Vice President takes on a supporting role to the President, helping him/her in all ways possible.

Treasurer:
The Treasurer keeps accounts, deposits the organization's funds, and makes expenditures in a manner approved by the Business Office for Student Organizations. They must sign off on all club disbursements.

Publicity Director:
The Publicity Director is primarily in charge of the promotion and public relations of PUGG by posting flyers on campus, chalking, word of mouth and the like in accordance with Purdue guidelines. They are responsible for informing local media of events and handling all press inquiries.

Corporate Relations:
The Corporate Relations officer is responsible for contacting local and national companies for sponsorship. They should keep listings of all communication with such companies and follow up in a timely matter after an event.

Network Administrator:
The Network Administrator is responsible for the maintenance and management of the PUGG network switches and servers during the PUGG events, as well as the PUGG game servers. The Network Administrator is also partly in charge of updating and maintaining the network system used at LAN parties.

Webmaster / Head Programmer:
The Webmaster / Head Programmer is in charge of the upkeep and expansion of the PUGG website. The PUGG website is a key factor in the effective communication between PUGG members and officers and should strive to be the central meeting place for all Purdue University gamers. He/she is also responsible for updating and maintaining the PUGG network system used at LAN parties along with the Network Administrator.

LAN XXVIII - The Morning After

Thanks to everyone who came! At our peak we had about 55 people, which is a great turnout. We had some power issues, and blew a total of 5 fuses, which is as far as I know a PUGG record. :)

The Supreme Commander tournament didn't happen due to not enough players, however the Day of Defeat: Source and Counter-Strike: Source tournaments were a great success. DoD:S had 2 teams and CS:S had a whopping 7 teams play.

Congratulations to team Huevos Grandes for winning the DoD:S tournament. They are Chimp_On_Stilts, Eulogy, Nuiker, Cryptite, and the_rizzle.

Congratulations to team Explowned for winning the CS:S tournament. They are Ettiave, Forsaken, The Source Effect, Yoda, and Unseen Spectre.

I hope everyone had fun, and we look forward to seeing you at our last LAN this year, tentatively scheduled for April 14th, and tentatively set for Hillenbrand.

Official Server Forums

We have created boards in our forums for discussion about our new dedicated game servers. Currently there are boards for CoD2 and CS:S. The boards for BF2 and DoD:S will open when we get those servers running (hopefully this weekend).

The forums now have open registration to allow for players from our servers to join.

Dedicated Servers are in!

We jumped through all the bureaucratic hoops and finally got our game servers. They'll be configured by me and Ettiave sometime this weekend. We'll let everyone know when they're up for public use. We expect to pick a small handful of users to "beta test" the configuration to make sure we didn't miss anything important, like reserved game slots, etc.

Official Games List:
Counter-Strike: Source
Day of Defeat: Source
Call of Duty 2
Battlefield x?

I might be personally adding UT2K4 and anything else that catches my fancy. The web site will also be moved over to one of our 3 servers, so expect some PUGG.net downtime in the near future. We'll let you know when we expect this to happen.

Update: We just got our IP addresses assigned and our DNS names created! All that's left to do is start building the boxes, which will take place this weekend.

PUGG's New Switches

Here they are, our sexy brand spanking new (read, refurbished) HP ProCurve 4000M switches. Each has 80-ports of networking goodness. We are going to be doing some cool things with a combination of these switches and the ClarkConnect operating system this fall, like forcing people to register on ALP before they can do anything. What happened to the old switches you ask? Well, they were never actually PUGG's, they were on loan to us from Purdue, and we decided it was time we got our own set. These will serve us well in the coming years. We now own all the equipment necessary to run a LAN party.

We owe a thanks to HorizonDatacom for giving us a great deal on these switches. Visit their web site at http://www.horizondatacom.com.

Recent Downtime

Welcome back to the website and forums everyone!

As I'm sure everyone is well aware, out website has been down for over 3 weeks now. This was due to a hardware failure on the server that hosts our website. We were finally given access to our data last night, and Andy has managed to restore everything from that. We are taking steps to ensure that this does not happen again, primarily constant backups of this site and the database.

Let the posting being!

Great LAN!!!

Great LAN everyone! The LAN party Friday night went off without a hitch and started us off right. Thank you everyone who came. We had over 60 computers on the network at our peak, as well as some console gaming.

We had blocked ports for World of Warcraft, Everquest 2, and Guild Wars, as the vote on the forums was yes for doing so. I believe this went over well, as we had the majority of people stay until well past 2am, which normally doesn't happen. We will continue to do this so long as the members agree with it.

Stay tuned for more information on our next event, which will be even bigger and better than this one!
